01/04/2016 – Portfolio Updates

Happy New Year!

The trading year started off with a bang yesterday as the market imploded after weak data came out regarding Chinese manufacturing. The price of OIL tanked as well, which only further pushed the market into bear territory. Could be a rough couple of days ahead as the markets digest and await the Fed meeting minutes on Wednesday.

In light of all that bad news, it brings to mind what I love about trading. If people are panicking, there are opportunities everywhere. And if you aren’t comfortable with the volatility, you can always close your positions out and turn off the computer for the day.

Made some really GREAT trades today but gave us a good chunk of them trying to catch a falling knife on the Australian dollar. All in all, still another good day of trading. Total gain for the day was 9.28%.

12/31/2015 – Portfolio Updates

Last trading day of 2015! I had quite a bit of free time today at work, so made quite a few trades today. Got greedy at the end of the day and made some trades right before I left to go to a wedding. Didn’t check back in on the market until right before the close and took a beating for not setting my stop losses. This is the same mistake I made yesterday, need to get better at following through on setting stop losses as soon as I enter a trade.

On a positive note, I came up with a good format to show my progress to date, I’ll refine this over the coming weeks to make sure the data is easy to follow. Below is a snapshot of my trades today, as well as overall progress. Despite a bad day, ended the week up 14.96%, so no complaints there!

12/30/2015 – Portfolio Updates

A great day in the market yesterday, friends, with the major market indexes all up over 1%. Executed quite a few small trades yesterday testing the timing of my new signals, and had some good success overall, but at the expense of my win/loss ratio. I’ll be updating the format of these posts in the pending days as I refine my metrics, but added some additional detail for today’s report for those interested.

One important note – I forgot to place my stop loss on the first trade of the day, and by the time I checked back in on the trades after my morning meeting, I had taken a beating. Luckily it was only a small trade for the portfolio, but the rest of the day’s gains just went to filling in the whole I dug in the morning. Lesson learned!

Total for the portfolio ended up positive at 0.64%, but need to find a better way to show this based on the data below. Not all positions are equal in value, so it’s not easily apparent. Will work on this in the coming days.

Symbol Long/Short Leverage Entry Exit P/L (%) W/L
USDCAD Long 200 $1.3856 $1.3824 -47.46% Loss
